Hesitation phenomena in the speech of 2022 English education students at Universitas Negeri Padang

This study is aimed to identify the hesitation phenomena and the frequency of its occurrence in 2022 students’ speech of English education program at Universitas Negeri Padang. This research used descriptive method with qualitative analysis. The data was collected from 24 students of English education program who has finished all speaking subjects (speech). The instrument of this research was speaking test, with 5 minutes minimum duration and the topic chosen by the researcher. The hesitation phenomena are classified into 6 types: false start, repetition, self-correction, silent pause, filled pause and lengthening. The result showed that most of the students used filled pause (393 times) in which 315 times un-lexicalized and 78 times lexicalized, followed by repetition (84 times), self-correction (40 times), lengthening (28 times), silent pause (170 second in average). However, there was no false start occur in their speaking. In conclusion, the most hesitation phenomena used by the students of English Education Program of UNP year 2022 was filled pause (393 times) and silent pause (170 second or 2 minutes 50 second). It assumed that students’ lack of knowledge might cause the occurrence of filled pause and silent pause rather than other phenomena.
